The Spring 2015 Lazarus Artist in Residency explores Art & Science and invites artist Tomás Saraceno to engage in cross-disciplinary projects and conversations with scientists, engineers, and MICA faculty and students to explore themes such as gravity, flight, interstellar space and aerial photography/views.
The thematic focus of the residency and its goals of bringing artists and designers together with other fields and practices represent the insatiable curiosity and pioneering spirit of President Emeritus Fred Lazarus IV, whose leadership inspired and supported the teaching and learning of new fields of art and design.

Out of This Planet, Conversations in Art & Science
As part of the Lazarus Artist in Residency, MICA will host a panel discussion with artist Tomás Saraceno, astro-physicist Mario Livio and former astronaut Marsha Ivins. Moderated by Luca Buvoli, artist and program director of MICA's Mount Royal School of Art, the participants will share their discoveries and methods of exploring space and discuss their approaches to decoding its mysteries and speculating about its future. Our hope is that this cross-disciplinary dialogue will inspire new ways of thinking, making and imagining what is possible in the studio, in the lab, out of the studio, out of the lab and even perhaps out of this planet.
With this Art & Science series, MICA is taking an active role in a Baltimore-wide conversation about art and the frontiers of science, highlights of which include the exhibition Front Room: Dario Robleto at The Baltimore Museum of Art; a lecture with Dario Robleto in conversation with scientists from the the Space Telescope Science Institute, organized by The Baltimore Museum of Art; studio critiques by artist-in-residence Robleto at Mount Royal School of Art; and the exhibition Imaginary Science Museum with MICA’s M.F.A. in Curatorial Practice and Graphic Design students.
