Serpentine Gallery 24-Hour Interview Marathon

Evolving from Hans Ulrich Obrist’s lifelong interview series and his ongoing collaborations with Rem Koolhaas, the 24-hour Serpentine Gallery Interview Marathon was a unique event in which Koolhaas and Obrist interviewed leading architects, artists, philosophers, writers, filmmakers and theorists from 6pm on 28 July to 6pm on 29 July 2006. The Serpentine Gallery Interview Marathon took place in the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2006, co-designed by Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, with Arup: the seventh Pavilion in the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion commission, conceived by Julia Peyton-Jones in 2000. By creating a context for shared discussion between cultural practitioners, the Gallery and the public, it embodied the aims of both the architect and the Gallery, and acted as live research, exposing the hidden and invisible layers of London. The illustrious group of speakers, and their acutely perceptive investigation into the intersecting layers of London, gave the Serpentine Gallery Interview Marathon its now mythic status. Their commentary and energy, even during the early hours of the morning, created a gripping event.
