They shaved their heads on stage, "worked" with butter and eggs, destroyed grand pianos, and blew up heads of lettuce. It has been 50 years since a loose band of international young artists made headlines such as "Newest Music in Madhouse-Style," "They Hang up Cabbage and Say it's Art," and "Can No One Stop Happenings?"
It is high time to take a fresh look at the Fluxus festivals of the 1960s and 1970s that took place all over Europe: Wuppertal, Düsseldorf, Wiesbaden, London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Nizza, Vilnius, Prague, Berlin, Aberystwyth, Budapest, Poznań … Performative aspects of Fluxus will be in the focus. Rich material, much of which is yet to be published (films, audio tapes, photographs, scores, interviews with artists, and eye-witnesses) is presented in an interactive exhibition installation and background material is made accessible through a digital archive. Along with artist performances, lectures, and thematic tours, visitors are invited to perform Fluxus compositions themselves.
The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with extensive documentation on 32 European Fluxus festivals of the 1960s and 70s ("The lunatics are on the loose …" European Fluxus Festivals 1962–1977, ed. by Petra Stegmann) with contributions by Jennifer Burkard, Myriam Kroll, Peter van der Meijden, Susanne Rennert, Henar Rivière Ríos, Heike Roms, Vanja Sisek, and artists' contributions.
